Office Ergonomics – Manual Handling Training Course
Manual Handling Training Course and Ergonomics – Train the Trainer
Office environments also pose a manual handling risk, this may be the movement of boxes, files, paper, furniture and equipment. HSE guidance on manual handling can be downloaded here:
HSE Manual Handling at Work Guidance
Over our years of extensive involvement with manual handling issues from an ergonomics perspective we have learned that providing the workforce with some simple principles that can be applied will gain the most benefit. We have therefore developed the ELITE BACKS® manual handling programme. This programme is tailored to include the actual tasks that are conducted by your organisation to ensure its relevance. ELITE BACKS® has helped hundreds of organisations get the message across of the importance of awareness and action when manual handling in an interesting and easy to understand way. ELITE BACKS ® stands for:
Awareness
E
Equipment, is there any equipment to make the job easier?
L
Load, what type of load is it and how should I handle it?
I
Individual, avoiding poor postures and know my limits
T
Task, how should I do this do I need to take a break?
E
Environment, is this posing a risk?
Action
B
Back, keep a strong S shape with head above hips
A
Arms, Keep them close to the body and use biceps and triceps
C
Coupling, get a good grip on the load
K
Knees, bend knees rather than back and use strong leg muscles
S
Stance, get into a stable stance with feet hip width apart.

The manual handling training provided by our ergonomists will ensure that delegates understand the risks of poor manual handling and how to assess and reduce the risks they are exposed to. The course is a mixture of theory and practical session to allow delegates to put into practice what they learn. The training will help reduce manual handling injuries and increase your employees’ awareness. The course includes:
Anatomy and physiology of the human body
The structure of the spine and discs
Definitions of manual handling
Physics of lifting and handling
Poor postures (twisting, bending and reaching)
Overview of tasks conducted by delegates
Risk assessment of Posture, Environment, Load and Task
Group work looking at different tasks with presentation
A shorter course can be delivered to your requirements if simple postural awareness is required.
The document below summarises some of the projects we have been involved in:
Manual Handling Risk Assessments
We are able to assess the postures adopted by your employees and determine the level of risk of musculoskeletal disorders your employees are exposed to. We would provide a report with the risk levels and recommended actions to reduce the risk levels. We can conduct one off assessments or regular assessments for your organisation. Our assessment would consist of:
Visit from one of our ergonomists
Walkthrough of areas concerned
Collection of video and photographic data where required
Off-site analysis of postures adopted and risk levels
Report outlining risk levels and remedial measures
